It’s a type of compression for files that is not an open format. It was developed by a Russian software engineer by the name of Eugene Roshal.
The default format is PSD, which stands for Photoshop Document. PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics, with so-called “lossless” compression. JPEG or JPG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, with so-called “lossy” compression.
